Benazir Bhutto: Bin Laden Murdered
I haven't posted anything about the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto yet because beyond the basic human reaction of sadness and disappointment over another brutal murder, I didn't know very much about Bhutto. Beyond the fact that she was elected the first woman prime minister of a majority Muslim country (Pakistan), she was a complete stranger to me. I had nothing to add. I still have very little to say about it.
For now, the mainstream press is in reportage mode over her death, basically rehashing the headline, "Benazir Bhutto Assassinated," showing footage of the day she died, and repeating that we still don't know for sure who killed her.
I guess that's all true, but I'd appreciate a little news context. Tell me about her as a leader. How popular was she in Pakistan? Why was she forced from office twice? What was her stance on the Taliban? Women's rights? Democracy? I still don't know much about Bhutto herself, other than the fact that she's gone. I'm certainly not getting a lot of useful information about her from CNN or FOX.
Not to take anything at all away from Benazir Bhutto, but I don't think most Americans know much about her. Before her assassination, I bet that 9 of 10 Americans couldn't even have identified her if they'd been shown a photograph.
But this Bhutto interview clip from November is certainly interesting. In it, she flatly states that Osama bin Laden was murdered. It was either a slip of the tongue, or she must have believed the bin Laden videos authenticated by the CIA were fakes.
