John Edwards opens mouth, waits for passing foot to enter

I like John Edwards, but I think he's being a little reckless with his campaign. What people are calling a non-traditional campaign, with Edwards speaking off the cuff, giving exclusive interviews to small media outlets wherever his campaign stops, is usually a death wish for candidates. The reason most candidates avoid the impromptu news conference is because no matter how slick you are, not matter how smart, sooner or later the media will catch you saying something you didn't intend to say and make a huge deal out of it.

Prepared texts exist for a reason: necessity. While refreshing to see a person speak like a regular joe, mark my words, John Edwards will stick his foot in his mouth if he keeps it up. Read more here...

John Edwards is more "slick" than "smart." He knows that his "aw shucks" and "good ole boy" southern charm play much better with the smaller news outlets. Plus he is on familiar turf with his only issue, poverty.

He is deliberately staying away from the mainstream media so as not to have to answer questions on how he would get us out of Iraq, how would he deal with Iran and North Korea and other international issues in which he has zilch know-how and experience. Globe-trotting like he's done the last couple of years does not automatically make him an expert on national security and give him instant foreign affairs experience. Neither does being able to name the various heads of foreign countries which he bragged about recently on Hardball.

As for prepared text, he probably doesn't see the need for it and thinks it would work against his image. Don't forget his experience as a multi-millionare trial attorney has taught him how to play to people like a jury.

When more seasoned candidates get in the picture and he has to compete, will he stand a good chance of showing what a lightweight he is.
I need to see some of that alleged trial attorney toughness from Edwards before I think of him as a serious contender. Edwards' poor performance in the 2004 VP debate with Cheney left a lasting impression in my mind. In my opinion, Cheney manhandled Edwards in that debate -- absolutely manhandled him.

I love Edwards' optimism and his message, but a president needs to be able to stand tough against someone like Cheney who's good at sounding like he knows what he's talking about even when the evidence proves that he doesn't.
LOL. Poor performance. That is ridiculous. Did you even watch it. He did an amazing job against the VP. Its jus tto bad it was Kerry/Edwards instead of Edwards/well...not Kerry.
Yeah, I thought Edwards really showed his lack of experience. I'm not gonna be all "ra-ra" for someone just because they're going against a scumbag like Cheney. I'd expected Edwards to bring more specifics to the table. We heard so much about his trial experience going into the debate that I expected a more assertive performance. You can't play softball with someone like Cheney. Instead, Cheney was the more calculating, assertive man. Polls after the debate were almost evenly split on which man came out victorious. I thought Edwards missed a golden opportunity to go for the jugular.

Here's a highlight from the debate: http://www.pollyticks.com/i...
