How dare you attack St. Ronnie the Gump? Are you a slave of Satan? Do you question the majesty of the luckiest president in American history? Don't you realize the Great Dunce opened the door for the glorious wonders we have today? Don't you realize that Bush is just Reagan Lite, a weak imitation of the Master? St. Ronnie's budget deficits paved the way for Bush's program, but Bush is simply too inept to pull off Reagan's lie that deficits don't matter. The Great Communicator, indeed.
Rhino, I didn't think much of Reagan when it came to the economy. I think his policies vastly favored the wealthy over the poor, but at least he kept the country out of war with the USSR. For that, at least, he deserves some credit.
Conservatives would ask, would you trade the collapse of Soviet communism, your smaller tax burden, some of your income -- and possibly your job -- in exchange for eliminating that $2.1 trillion in debt added under Reagan? Tough question.
What I think is so fascinating about Reagan supporters is that they think of Reagan as a fiscal conservative. To think he was a good president is one thing. It's debatable, but I'll go along with them on that. Sure, Reagan was a good president overall, but one thing he was NOT was fiscally conservative.
Since Reagan, the Republican Party has had no concept of fiscal conservatism. Republican governments spend money like it's going out of style. The Republican Party IS the party of overspending. Period.
